What kind of small animal should I get?

I'd really like to get a pet. I'd like it to be something small. I do work full-time so I guess it would have to be something that would do okay when I was away at work. So something that isn't super needy, but at the same time would like to come out and play every now and thing. Something relatively easy, but I don't mind having to clean the cage out and give baths or anything like that. I was thinking something along the lines of like a hedgehog, guenia pig, sugar glider, chinchilla, snake, ferret, etc.
